Flapjack Flipout Demos
Flapjack Flipout Demos

Welcome to Flappin' Jack's! Have a seat and the server will be right with you... Oh! You’re here about the short order cook position? Right this way!

You and the other players will be racing against each other to fill the most flapjack orders. Grab your griddle and may the best flapjack flipper wins!

Flapjack Flipout is a dexterity race for 2-4 players. All players need to grab a pancake, place it face up on their griddle to see what kind it is, then flip it over once (to cook the other side) and slide it off their griddle onto the table in any organization the player wants to keep. As soon as you think you can fill an order, ring the bell! All play stops and the player that rang the bell must complete the order by revealing the correct pancakes without first looking at their types.

Mission accomplished") into settings and worlds that are centered on different cultures: What about worlds where there are no straight, white people (or where they are the minority)?

Skull King Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

Skull King is a trick-taking game similar to 'Oh Hell!', 'Wizard', 'Eucher' and 'Spades', with players needing to state how many tricks they think they'll win each round. A unique element of this game is that bidding takes place simultaneously, leading to rounds that are sometimes over, or under-bid. As players must win the exact number of tricks that they bid to earn points, winning too many tricks is just as bad as winning too few and this leads to intense competition where losing a trick can be as exciting as winning one.
Skull King uses a 66-card deck that consists of five Escape cards, four suits numbered 1-13, five Pirate cards, 1 Tigress card, and 1 Skull King card. The game lasts ten rounds, and in each round, each player is dealt as many cards as the number of the round. All players simultaneously bid on the number of tricks they think they'll take by holding out a fist and on the count of three revealing a certain number of fingers (or possibly a closed fist for a bid of zero tricks).
Standard rules apply for the playing of cards, with one player leading off a card and other players following suit, if possible, and playing something else if not; however, a player may always choose to play one of the special, unnumbered cards — and the power of those cards might let you win a trick that otherwise would have gotten away. In more detail, the black Jolly Roger suit trumps the other three suits, a Mermaid trumps all numbered cards, a Pirate trumps the Mermaid, and the Skull King trumps everything — except if he appears in the same trick with a Mermaid, in which case she captures him and wins instead. An Escape card loses to any other card, and the Tigress card serves as either a pirate or escape card as desired by the player. Whoever wins a trick leads in the next trick.
If a player makes his bid exactly, he scores 20 points per trick; if he collects more or fewer tricks, he loses 10 points per trick he's off. If a player makes a bid of zero tricks, he wins points equal to ten times the current round number — but if he takes even a single trick, he loses this many points instead. If a player catches pirates with the Skull King, or the King with a mermaid, he scores bonus points. Whoever has the most points after ten rounds wins.

Wordsy Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

Each round, players study the 8 letters (always consonants) on the board in real time. The first player to write down a word flips a 30-second timer. That player is now the fastest player, and every other player now has 30 seconds to write down their word.
Once time has run out, the fastest player scores their word by counting the point value of each of the matching letters on the board. Players are not limited to the letters on the board; they can add any letters they'd like. Letters score based on which of the 4 columns of the board they're in, and how rare they are.
After the fastest player scores, the first player clockwise scores their word, and compares it to the fastest player. If that player scored more than the fastest player, they score a small bonus.
Every other player scores their word and checks for a bonus. Once they've all done this, the fastest player scores a bonus if their score is equal to or higher than half the other player's scores.
After 7 rounds, players add the scores their best 5 words, plus their bonuses. The player with the most points wins!

Hanabi is a cooperative game in which players try to create perfect sets by placing the cards on the table in the right order.

The card deck consists of five different colors of cards, numbered 1–5 in each color. For each color, the players try to place a row in the correct order from 1–5. Sounds easy, right? Well, not quite, as in this game you hold your cards so that they're visible only to other players. To assist other players in playing a card, you must give them hints regarding the numbers or the colors of their cards. Players must act as a team to avoid errors and to finish the fireworks display before they run out of cards.

New York Slice Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

You've just been given a shot at being the head chef at the prestigious New York Slice pizza parlor. Now you and your fellow pizza chef wannabes have to make the most amazing pizzas...one slice at a time!
In New York Slice, each player slices pizzas into portions, giving their opponents first choice, while they take the leftovers. There are a dozen kinds of pizza to work with, from veggie to hawaiian to meat lover's, and each player decides if they want to eat or keep some of the slices, building the best collection of pizzas possible!
Each time a player slices a pizza, there's a different special to go along with it, whether it's allocated to one of the portions or placed on its own. Specials provide the player with special powers or points, such as calling dibs on a slice before the pizza is divided, getting one of the normally-out-of-the-game "mystery slices', having an opportunity to "sneak a slice" by moving it from one portion to another when they choose, and many more—there are 14 different "Today's Specials" in the game.
Some slices have anchovies on them (yuck!), which are worth negative points to anyone who collects them — but anchovies might show up on different pizza types you're collecting, so in order to have the majority of a type, you just might have to collect one with anchovies on it!
If you tie another player for the most slices of a type, neither of you gets any points — but a bunch of slices have two types of pizza on them, with each combo slice being worth half a slice of each type, which is great for breaking ties.
Most slices have pepperoni on them, which you can eat for points (instead of collecting to go for the majority of each slice type).

Diamonds Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

Diamonds is a trick-taking card game in which players collect Diamonds — not cards bearing that suit, mind you, but rather actual "Diamond Crystals" (acrylic crystals) included in the game.
What makes the game of Diamonds different from other trick-taking card games is that when you cannot follow suit you get a "Suit Action" based on what suit you do play. Suit Actions are also taken by the winner of each trick, as well as at the end of a full Round of play.
Suit Actions will enable players to take Diamond Crystals from the Supply, moving them to their Showroom (where they may score 1 point) or to their Vault (where they will score 2 points). The Vault is a secure area, but the Showroom is vulnerable to theft by the other players.
The deck in Diamonds consists of sixty cards, numbered 1-15 in the standard suits. In each round, the players start with a hand of ten cards. One player leads a card, and everyone else must play one card, following suit if possible.  As you play a card, if you cannot follow suit, you immediately get a Suit Action in the suit you did play. The player who played the highest card in the suit that was led wins the trick, and also gets a Suit Action.
The player who won the trick leads a card to start the next trick. After a full Round of ten tricks, whoever has taken the most cards in each suit once again gets a Suit Action. If a player has taken no tricks, that player gets two Diamonds Suit Actions. Players then start a new round.
Whoever has the most points in Diamond Crystals at the end of the game wins!

Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Without teamwork you'll never survive. Without betrayal you'll never win. An artifact of untold power lies in your hands. To claim it, you must escape the caverns alive. No less than nine horrific beasts stand in your way - that, and the greed of the other players. In this game of kill-stealing, you decide whether to swing for a whopping 50 points of damage - or hold back, awaiting a more opportune time to strike. Only the final blow matters if you are to score the kill. Hold back or sabotage other's plans too much - and the entire party will die, without a winner. Genre-bending. Dice-less. The totally immersive feel of a RPG in a simple, elegant card game.

Working in Games Real Talk
Working in games is fun! I should start a game company! Freelancing is great! All of these CAN be true, but let's real-world for a moment. Taxes are a thing. Your enthusiasm can/will be turned against you. Many game companies (big and small) pull some REAL sketchy shit because you'll endure it for your "dream-job." "Following your Dream" doesn't need to mean being abused. It might also mean keeping your day job. I'd like people to leave a panel with this not disheartened, but with an arsenal of questions they should know to ask potential employers, a sense of what reasonable rates for work are, and what contract terms are red flags. (A 48-hour-long panel.)

Black Shield Prods. - Hogwarts: First Class
Hogwarts is coming to OrcaCon!

Hogwarts: First Class
Long before Harry Potter became the Boy Who Lived, a group of powerful witches and wizards brought together a talented few to learn the secrets of magic. The histories say that there were four great houses, but the truth has been lost to the ages, or perhaps covered up? Join the first class of Hogwarts students as they uncover the fate of the mysterious Fifth House.
This game will go from 4-8pm on Friday and 12pm to 10pm Saturday. It's a drop in and drop out system, you can come and go and come back as you wish, playing the same character throughout the game no matter how many hours you play. The FATE system is easy to use and the GMs are more than happy to explain it to the players. All ages are welcomed and no prior knowledge required.

Running throughout the day; just check in at table 140 in the Main Bellevue Ballroom.

Playing the Other
A discussion about how to play/portray characters who are different from you, as a player, GM, or even a creator. On the one hand, roleplaying is a great opportunity to empathize and experience things vicariously, but on the other, it's easy to fetishize or stereotype the experience of others. What's appropriate and how do you make the most effective use of this opportunity?

Nevermore Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

Pass with care...
Many are the paths to power: brute force, subtle deception, cunning trickery. You hold the cards...but you can't keep them all. What will you decide to collect for personal gain? And what are you willing to give up in order to destroy? The Ravens are gathering, many of whom used to be rivals. Will you rise to power or simply be...nevermore.
Nevermore is a casual-style, card-drafting game in which you quickly build your hand each round, collecting cards you want and poisoning your opponent's hand by passing along cards you think they can't use. Whoever holds the most of a given suit, gains the power of that suit to attack, heal, acquire Light or Shadow magicks and score victory points.
Will you transform all your rivals into ravens — or can they regain their human form in time to score enough victory to win?

Acting the Part - Bringing Your RP Character to Life
Learning complicated rules systems and battling recalcitrant dice is one thing, but when it comes to tabletop role playing games, one of the most difficult aspects for both new and experienced players is the actual role playing. Going from a mild mannered, introverted geek, to a smooth talking space pirate or brash, half orc warrior with a love of bad puns can be a stretch. We'll focus on using basic acting and improv techniques to help you learn to inhabit your characters and bring them to life at the table.

Car Wars 3D Tournament Qualifier
Limited Capacity filling up

Car Wars 3-D Tournament

He triggered the rear guns once more. A direct hit! The blue car skidded as the driver lost control – then flipped and caught fire. That would teach him not to tailgate . . .

Car Wars is the game of the freeways of the future, where the right of way goes to the biggest guns. Players build vehicles complete with weapons, armor, power plants, and more. Then they take them out on the desolate roads, or maybe the brightly lit arenas, to come home as "aces," or to crash and burn.
The battlefield for the tournament is a 3-D arena upscaled from the Classic game.
No experience is necessary to play, both rookie duelists and veteran aces are welcome. Designs will be provided.

This tournament features 4 qualifier rounds, starting at 9, 11:30, 2, and 4:30, with a maximum of 8 players per round. Play in as many or as few qualifier games as you'd like - they are standalone games. The top two finishers from each qualifier round earn a seat at the final at 7.

Finalists may bring their own Division 30 arena-legal design (with 50 point characters) if they wish or use one provided by the host.
The overall victor of the tournament will take home a trophy to commemorate the event!
 Drive Offensively!

The winners of this tournament can play in the Final at 7pm.

GoH - Katherine Cross: Using Sociology for Fun and Profit in RPG Writing
When you're working as a contractor for an established RPG whose setting you didn't create, how do you write in an original way? How, indeed, can you pry things open to make them more interesting and inclusive? Look for the cracks in your setting, everything unexplained, everything that's a throwaway line, and dive into the breach looking for latent functions, folkways, symbolic interactions and all sorts of other juicy concepts that will make your work sing.

Pyramid Poker Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

Pyramid Poker is a two-player design that consists of 54 wooden rectangular blocks, 52 of them with the standard card deck distribution (2-A in four suits) on one side and two of them with a pharaoh on one side.
To set up the game, place all of the blocks face down and shuffle them. Each player then takes fifteen blocks and turns the blocks so that only they see what's on them. They take turns placing the blocks into a two-dimensional pyramid-shaped structure, again seeing only their blocks, then they take turns removing any one block from the pyramid and placing it into one of three poker hands that they're constructing. Each poker hand is competing against the one opposite it that's being built by the opponent.
If a player draws a pharaoh, they draw three face-down blocks that weren't initially chosen, discard two of them, then add the third block to one of their poker hands.
Once all the blocks have been removed, the player who wins two or three of the poker hands wins!

The winners of this tournament will be invited to compete in the Finals tournament at 7pm.

Kingsburg
Limited Capacity seats available

In Kingsburg, players are Lords sent from the King to administer frontier territories.

The game takes place over five years, a total of 20 turns. In every year, there are 3 production seasons for collecting resources, building structures, and training troops. Every fourth turn is the winter, in which all the players must fight an invading army. Each player must face the invaders, so this is not a cooperative game.

The resources to build structures and train troops are collected by influencing the advisers in the King's Council. Players place their influence dice on members of the Council. The player with the lowest influence dice sum will be the first one to choose where to spend his/her influence; this acts as a way of balancing poor dice rolling. Even with a very unlucky roll, a clever player can still come out from the Council with a good number of resources and/or soldiers.

Each adviser on the King's Council will award different resources or allocate soldiers, victory points, and other advantages to the player who was able to influence him/her for the current turn.

At the end of five years, the player who best developed his assigned territory and most pleased the King through the Council is the winner.

Many alternate strategies are possible to win: will you go for the military way, disregarding economic and prestige buildings, or will you aim to complete the big Cathedral to please the King? Will you use the Merchant's Guild to gain more influence in the Council, or will you go for balanced development?

Coup Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive...
In Coup, you want to be the last player with influence in the game, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area.
Each player starts the game with two coins and two influence – i.e., two face-down character cards; the fifteen card deck consists of three copies of five different characters, each with a unique set of powers:
  •  Duke: Take three coins from the treasury. Block someone from taking foreign aid.
  •  Assassin: Pay three coins and try to assassinate another player's character
  •  Contessa: Block an assassination attempt against yourself.
  •  Captain: Take two coins from another player, or block someone from stealing coins from you.
  •  Ambassador: Draw two character cards from the Court (the deck), choose which (if any) to exchange with your face-down characters, then return two. Block someone from stealing coins from you.
On your turn, you can take any of the actions listed above, regardless of which characters you actually have in front of you, or you can take one of three other actions:
  •  Income: Take one coin from the treasury.
  •  Foreign aid: Take two coins from the treasury.
  •  Coup: Pay seven coins and launch a coup against an opponent, forcing that player to lose an influence. (If you have ten coins or more, you must take this action.)
When you take one of the character actions – whether actively on your turn, or defensively in response to someone else's action – that character's action automatically succeeds unless an opponent challenges you. In this case, if you can't (or don't) reveal the appropriate character, you lose an influence, turning one of your characters face-up. Face-up characters cannot be used, and if both of your characters are face-up, you're out of the game.
If you do have the character in question and choose to reveal it, the opponent loses an influence, then you shuffle that character into the deck and draw a new one, perhaps getting the same character again and perhaps not.
The last player to still have influence – that is, a face-down character – wins the game!

Car Wars 3D Tournament Finals

NOTE: THIS IS THE FINALS FOR THE QUALIFIER TOURNAMENTS EARLIER IN THE DAY. TO PLAY IN THE FINALS YOU MUST HAVE ONE ONE OF THE QUALIFIERS.

Antiquity
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Antiquity is a strategy game set in an environment loosely modeled on Italy in the late Middle Ages. Players choose their own victory condition: they can focus on population growth, trade, conquest, or city building by choosing their patron saint.

Each strategy requires a completely different style of play. Or you can choose to adore Santa Maria, the most powerful saint of all -- but you'll be expected to build a civilization twice as impressive as any other player.

While your economy is constantly improving, with more and more advanced cities bringing new options each turn, the land around your cities is slowly being depleted, forcing you to travel further and further to gather your raw materials -- until finally, there is no more land left to farm. Let's hope one of you has won the game before that time!

Dominant Species
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

90,000 B.C. — A great Ice Age is fast approaching. Another titanic struggle for global supremacy has unwittingly commenced between the varying animal species.

Dominant Species is a game for 2 to 6 players that abstractly recreates a tiny portion of ancient history: the ponderous encroachment of an Ice Age and what that entails for the living creatures trying to adapt to the slowly-changing Earth.

Each player will assume the role of one of six major Animal groups—Mammal, Reptile, Bird, Amphibian, Arachnid or Insect. Each begins the game in a state of natural balance with regards to one another. But that won’t last: It is indeed "survival of the fittest."

Through wily Action Pawn placement, players will strive to become Dominant on as many different Terrain tiles as possible in order to draw beneficial Dominance Cards. Players will also want to propagate their individual Species in order to earn Victory Points for his particular Animal. Players will be aided in these endeavors via Growth, Migration and Domination actions, among others.

All of this eventually leads to the end game – the final ascent of the Ice Age – where the player with the most Victory Points will have his Animal crowned the Dominant Species.

But somebody better become dominant quickly, because it’s getting mighty cold...

Sovereignty, ethnicity, and mixed race in storytelling
Race is not sovereignty. Ethnicity isn't race. And mixed race communities navigate deeper complexities than the already complex power laden spaces of race, ethnicity, and sovereignty. What does this mean for doing nuanced storytelling in games and fiction with an ever growing spotlight on representation?

The lunch break is almost there and all of the young penguins would finally get the fish they’ve been craving. However, some rascals think they are quick enough to snatch some of the fish before the lunch break starts, but they have forgotten one thing – the Hall Monitor! Each school day one of the penguins is designated to watch over the school, and this is his moment to shine – for each rascal penguin he catches he would get additional fish!
A fun run takes place – the rascals are running everywhere and trying to snatch some fish on their way, but the Hall Monitor is trying to catch each and one of them to have some order in the school. Who will be more successful?
ICECOOL is a flicking game in which each round one of the players takes the role of the Hall Monitor (also called "the Catcher") – his aim will be to catch each other penguin and get points for that. The others (also known as "Runners") will try to run through several doors, thus gaining fish (that give them points) on their way. When either the Hall Monitor has caught each other penguin once or any of the others has gone through all 3 doors that have fish on them, the round is over. Each player will take the role of the Hall Monitor once and at the end of the game the winner will be the one with the most points on their fish cards.
The penguins can be flicked in a straight line, make curves and even jump over the walls! Each player will have to use the best of their skills in order to get the most points in this fun and exciting game. It's not just cool, it's ICECOOL!

Charlatanry and Chicanery: Gamemastering on the Fly
Deep wells of research, reams of notes, and mountains of game statistics--these are all good Game Mastering tools, but there's one skill that can't be prepared: improvisation. The best GMs can create memorable experiences for players out of nearly any challenge, whether the players' decisions have entirely derailed their plans or the players just aren't picking up the hints they're dropping. In short, being a good GM is about being a consummate BSer. Join the best BSers in the business for tips, tricks, and philosophies, plus answers to your questions about how to handle the most challenging scenarios players might throw your way.

Dimension Tournament
Limited Capacity seats available

In the puzzle game Dimension six task cards are laid out each round, with these cards dictating how the balls in the game should be stacked on top of one another and side to side. These challenges aren't easy as some colors shouldn't touch one another.
Fast puzzle-solving is important, but more than that in the end whoever solves the most of these difficult tasks wins.
NOTE: IMPORTANT RULE CORRECTION
Game description from the Thames & Kosmos 2015 Science Kits & Games catalogue:
Dimension
The Spherical, Stackable, Fast-Paced Puzzle Game!
Dimension is a fast-paced, innovative puzzle game that takes place in three dimensions with 60 colourful spheres.
All of the players play at the same time.
Everybody tries to position the spheres on their tray to earn as many points as possible. The task cards indicate how the spheres must be placed to earn points: for example, exactly two orange spheres must be on the tray, black and blue must touch each other, and blue must not touch white.
Complete these tasks while racing against the timer. You get a point for each sphere you use and a bonus token for using all five colors, but you lose two points for each card you don't follow correctly.
Prove to your opponents that you are the master of multi-dimensional thinking!

As soon as you think you can fill an order, ring the bell! All play stops and the player that rang the bell must complete the order by revealing the correct pancakes without first looking at their types.
